Mom’s Old Fashioned Crumb Cake

My late mother was a fantastic cook and baker. From the indulgent double-dutch chocolate birthday cake to her delicious cottage cheese pie, Mom’s homemade baked goods were always a delectable and welcome treat! However, one of the all-time favorites from my childhood was this Crumb Cake recipe, which I believe has stood the test of time and has become synonymous with fall, as the warm aromas of cinnamon and nutmeg fill the air as it bakes. And while it’s the perfect weekend morning treat to pair with your cup of coffee, it also makes a satisfying evening snack.

Preheat oven to 350° and lightly grease an 8x8-inch baking pan.

Cream the following ingredients:

·         1 cup sugar

·         ¼ lb. butter

·         1½ cups of flour

Take out 1 cup of the above mixture and set it aside.

To the remainder, add and mix:

·         ½ cup of buttermilk

·         1 egg

·         1 tsp of baking powder

·         ½ tsp of baking soda

·         ½ tsp of salt

·         ½ tsp of cinnamon

·         ½ tsp of nutmeg

Spread ½ cup of the reserved crumb mixture evenly on the bottom of your lightly greased 8x8-inch baking pan. Then, add the batter and top with the remaining crumb mixture.

Bake at 350° for 15 to 20 minutes.

Allow to cool and then enjoy!!
